Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week with Technical Apprentice, Oliver

For 2025’s National Apprenticeship Week we caught up with technical apprentice Oliver Lucas, to find out about his training, his decision to change direction after A Levels, which is giving him the prospect for an exciting long-term career.

Tell us about your apprenticeship.

I’m working towards a level 4 EPNE apprenticeship, which stands for Electrical Power Network Engineer. It covers a full range of electrical installations from fitting of substation equipment through to commissioning. I’ve been with Dunamis since September and have completed all my site competencies and have been visiting several sites with my mentor Garet Duncan, who is a Commissioning Engineer.

I saw this role was available and was attracted to helping Dunamis play its part in supporting the increasing use of renewable energy.

When did you start the apprenticeship?

I’ve just returned from Chester when I spent some time at my training provider’s academy, so now I am ready to start the actual apprenticeship. I’ve been shadowing with the team at Dunamis for a few months and I’ve loved it and has got me really interested with working on site.

What’s your ambition for your career?

When I complete my apprenticeship I need to choose between being a Design Engineer and a Commissioning Engineer. Both are technical roles, but one is more office-based while the other is primarily operational. I am enjoying being on site, but I want to gain experience across both areas and then make a decision at the end of the three years.

I saw this role was available and was attracted to helping Dunamis play its part in supporting the increasing use of renewable energy. I want to stay with the company for a long time and go as high as I can go.

Are you enjoying working for Dunamis?

Everyone at Dunamis has been extremely supportive and encouraging.  It feels like a family and I have been welcomed into the business. My mentor Garet and all of the team, including the HR guys, have been so supportive, they’ve been flawless. I want to stay with the company for a long time and progress as far as possible.
